Our food, treats and extras

Feeding Ella’s freeze-dried raw food comes with several fantastic benefits. As it’s a microbiologically raw food, it retains all of the benefits and goodness of a fresh raw diet, but with the convenience of a dry food.

Some benefits you might start to notice in your dog can include a glossier, healthier coat, improved skin and digestion, and smaller, firmer stools.

There are multiple amazing benefits to feeding a cold-pressed diet, but one that gets a special mention is its digestibility. The pellets dissolve from the outside in, meaning it doesn’t expand in your dog’s tummy, making it a great option for sensitive stomachs.

These benefits are all as a result of being fed a nutritional and delicious diet, free from artificial additives and comprised of only the best, carefully selected ingredients to nourish your dog from the inside out.

How it’s made: Both our freeze-dried and cold-pressed recipes use high quality, human-grade ingredients. The only difference is in the way they are made. Cold-pressing uses low temperatures (42-47 °C) to gently press the food for a few seconds.

Whereas freeze-drying removes 98% of the moisture, with no heat. This process leaves behind a nutritious, microbiologically raw nugget.

Compare these methods to commercial kibble, which is extruded at extremely high temperatures of at least 130 °C, destroying the natural nutrients and proteins. Because of this, the food requires the essential vitamins and minerals to be artificially sprayed back on at the end.

Price: Freeze-drying is a more complex process than cold-pressing and requires more complex equipment. As a result, the end-product is priced differently. However, it’s important to remember that our freeze-dried food has had almost all of its moisture removed, making it much lighter and nutritionally denser than our cold-pressed products.

This means your dog will require smaller portions, allowing your bag of freeze-dried dog food to last longer.

Storage: Both foods are room temperature stable and can be stored in the cupboard! No freezing, no thawing and no special storage required.

Puppies: Our cold-pressed food is suitable for puppies from 4 weeks of age. For young puppies, we recommend soaking the pellets in warm water for 10 minutes before serving to soften the food. We only recommend freeze-dried food for dogs that are fully grown.

For smaller breeds, this is around 10 months, whilst for larger breeds, this is around 15 months. The reason for this is because it is so nutritionally dense, it can be quite easy to accidentally over-feed, which can be detrimental to a young puppy’s growth and development.

We always recommend that new diets are introduced slowly and carefully to avoid upset tummies. Start by replacing 25% of your dog’s previous diet with Ella’s food, and gradually increase the amount of new food over 7-10 days.

Some dogs may take longer to adjust and have a more sensitive digestive system, especially when transitioning to a food with higher protein content.

If their poos are runnier than usual, we recommend lengthening the transition period from 7-10 days to 2-3 weeks. Transition guide

Ella & Co’s freeze-dried raw and cold-pressed foods are both ready to serve straight out of the bag! Simply weigh your dog’s food according to their tailored feeding guide, and pour the food into a bowl. You can choose to add a splash of warm water to help bring out the natural flavours and aromas.

If feeding freeze-dried raw, remember: the food you’re handling is raw, so be sure to wash your hands, as well as any serving utensils and surfaces before and after serving. The great thing about Ella’s food is there is no freezing or defrosting necessary – simply store in your kitchen cupboard!

You’ll receive a reusable storage bag with an airtight seal and special inner layer, keeping the food fresh and tasty for several months. Once opened, be sure to place the food in the storage bag, using the zip closure to lock in freshness.

We’d recommend all of Ella’s food to be kept in a cool, dry place, such as a cupboard.

Ella’s cold-pressed food is suitable for puppies over the age of 4 weeks. For young puppies, you can choose to soak the food in lukewarm water before serving, softening the pellets and releasing the natural aromas and flavours.

Puppies grow up so fast! It’s important to weigh your puppy regularly to make sure they are putting on weight at the right pace. If you’re unsure of how much to feed your puppy, get in touch with us at james@ella.co.

We can update your recommended portion sizes as they grow. Ella’s freeze-dried raw is not recommended for puppies. This is due to the food’s high-calorie density and to avoid puppies becoming too full.

This will also prevent overfeeding at a young age as it’s incredibly tasty and hard to resist! Once your puppy reaches 10+ months, they’ll be ready to graduate to a freeze-dried food subscription.
