Dog Safety: Halloween Edition!

Halloween is a night of fun and excitement, but for our dogs, it can be an overwhelming experience. With trick-or-treaters constantly at the front door, spooky Halloween decor all over the house, and Halloween treats that aren’t always pet-safe, it’s important to put a few safety tips into action.

As a dog dad to six, I’ve learned a few tricks over the years to keep them happy, calm, and safe. I hope you find my top Halloween pet safety tips useful!

Create a Safe Space

When it comes to Halloween pet safety, there are lots of things to consider. For example, trick-or-treaters ringing the bell can be stressful for dogs. To help them feel secure, set up a quiet area where they can retreat. Choose a spot away from the front door or the noise, fill it with their favourite blanket or toys, and make sure there’s plenty of water nearby.

Giving them treats they know and love, like James & Ella’s Freeze-Dried Treats, can help them relax and focus on something positive.

Watch Out for Toxic Treats

Halloween treats often contain ingredients that are toxic to dogs, like chocolate and sweeteners (found in many sugar-free sweets). Even small amounts can be harmful, so be vigilant about keeping treats that might be toxic to pets, out of reach.

Instead, have some pet-safe options on hand so they don’t feel left out – James & Ella’s Freeze-Dried and Air-Dried Treats make an excellent natural choice for those eager pups!

Avoid Hazardous Halloween Decor

Dogs are naturally curious about new things, and Halloween decor can be tempting for them to investigate or chew on. Keep glow sticks, candles, and electrical wires out of reach as they pose a danger if ingested or bitten into.

Throwing a Halloween party? Decorations with small parts can also be a choking hazard for our four-legged friends, so secure anything that might catch their attention or curiosity.

Keep Costumes Comfortable & Safe

If you’ve chosen a Halloween costume for your pet, pick one that allows them to move freely and gives them the ability to breathe easily. Avoid costumes with tight straps, small parts, or anything they might chew off.

Costumes can sometimes make our pets feel restricted, so it’s a good idea to keep a close eye on them to ensure they’re comfortable.

Keep an Eye on the Front Door

The constant opening and closing of the front door due to trick or treating can be overwhelming and may tempt your dog to escape. To prevent this, consider setting up a gate or barrier, or keep your dog in their safe space when trick-or-treaters arrive.

For some dogs, the excitement of people coming and going can heighten anxiety, so keeping them separated from the action might be best.

Use Treats to Reinforce Good Behaviour

Halloween is a great opportunity to practice calm behaviour. If your dog stays calm around the doorbell or avoids the Halloween decor, reward them with tasty, natural treats such as James & Ella’s Freeze-Dried or Air-Dried Treats.

Positive reinforcement is a wonderful way to encourage good behaviour and help them associate Halloween with positive experiences rather than stress.

Plan a Fun Halloween Treat Just for Them

While the kids and neighbours are enjoying their Halloween treats, why not give your dog a special treat of their own? Offer them Freeze-Dried Treats or part of their daily food allowance in a fun snuffle mat to keep them stimulated.

Avoid sugary treats that are not made for dogs, as they could lead to health issues.

James' Top Tip

Give your dog a ‘Halloween walk’ earlier in the day before the trick-or-treaters arrive. A long walk helps burn off energy, so they’re calmer when the festivities begin. Plus, it gives them a chance to enjoy Halloween in their own way, taking in the new smells and sights, without the chaos of the evening crowd!
