Dogs, adventures, and The Great Outpaws
Have you ever noticed how your dog always knows when you’re about to head out for an adventure? The moment I reach for my boots or rucksack, tails start wagging. It doesn’t matter if we’re off to the Highlands or just our everyday ramble – they somehow always know.
This summer, with #TheGreatOutpaws in full swing, our celebration of dogs and the great outdoors – I wanted to share five of my favourite destinations for hiking with dogs across the UK. These are the places I return to time and time again, and I hope they inspire your next outing too.
1. Windermere, The Lake District
The Lake District holds a very special place in my heart. It’s where Ella and I first hiked together properly, and where I’ve spent many memorable days with the rest of my pack.
Windermere makes a beautiful base. It’s easily accessible, wonderfully dog-friendly, and close to some of my favourite walks, including The Old Man of Coniston. On a clear day from its summit, you can see the sea, Helvellyn, the Langdale Pikes and even Scafell Pike.
The varied terrain keeps my dogs engaged and is a brilliant test of stamina for us all, and there’s nothing better than finishing with a rewarding pint at The Old Dungeon Ghyll – boots muddy and dogs snoozing at your feet.
2. The Norfolk Coast Path
A completely different landscape, but no less breathtaking. The Norfolk Coast Path runs for over 80 miles and offers huge skies, sandy beaches, and salt marshes. It’s ideal if you’re hiking with older dogs or simply want a slower pace.
I love the stretch from Wells-next-the-Sea to Holkham – your dogs will often have the beach almost to themselves!
3. The Scottish Highlands
There’s nowhere in the UK that makes you feel quite so small, and so alive. The Highlands are vast, rugged, and spectacular. I’ve hiked around Glencoe and Loch Lomond, and every time I’m reminded how restorative it is to be in such an untamed place. One of my favourite things is to take a dip in the loch – the cold water is daunting at first but really makes you feel alive.
You need to be properly equipped here as the weather can turn in a heartbeat, and I always bring waterproofs, extra layers and nutritious, high-value treats for the dogs!
4. The Cotswolds
For a gentler weekend escape, you can’t beat the Cotswolds. With its rolling hills, golden-stone villages, and dog-friendly pubs, it’s one of my favourite places to unwind.
One of my go-to walks is around Broadway Tower – you’ll find history, open space and incredible views. It’s also really accessible, so it’s a great option if you’re planning a last-minute adventure with your dog.
5. Cornwall’s South West Coast Path
The South West Coast Path in Cornwall offers some of the most dramatic hiking in the UK. I especially love the route between St Ives and Zennor – the cliffs are steep and the views are unforgettable.
It’s also one of my favourite places to capture photos of my dogs mid-adventure – the perfect opportunity to enter our #TheGreatOutpaws giveaway, especially if you’re in need of some sturdy new boots!
Time to get out and explore!
Wherever you decide to adventure, the UK is full of incredible landscapes waiting to be discovered, and there’s nothing quite like doing it with a dog by your side. They help you see the world differently. They ground you, motivate you, and make every muddy mile worth it.
