Understanding Pancreatitis

Pancreatitis is a serious condition that affects dogs of all breeds and ages. As pet parents, it’s crucial to understand how to properly feed our four-legged friends to manage this condition effectively.

In this blog, I’ll delve into what pancreatitis is, how it’s usually characterised and why low-fat diets are ideal to help prevent flare ups of this condition.

What are the symptoms?

Pancreatitis can occur in dogs due to various factors, including eating something they shouldn’t on a walk, high-fat diets, and metabolic disorders such as diabetes.

If your dog has pancreatitis, you might notice symptoms such as abdominal pain, reluctance to eat, vomiting, diarrhoea, and weight loss. In severe cases, it can lead to life-threatening complications. This is why proper nutrition plays a vital role in managing this condition.

The Importance of a Low-Fat Diet

One of the main recommendations for managing pancreatitis in dogs is feeding them a low-fat diet. The pancreas is responsible for insulin regulation in dogs, and when this important organ is overworked, that’s when Pancreatitis can occur. A low-fat diet helps reduce the workload on the pancreas, alleviating symptoms and preventing further inflammation.

Usually, vets will recommend to feed a diet with less than 15% fat. However it’s often difficult to find a low-fat diet which consists of only healthy, natural ingredients and isn’t artificially processed to bring down the fat content.

So, what are my options?

When I developed our range of cold-pressed foods, I knew I wanted to create a diet that could cater for dogs with debilitating pancreatitis. James & Ella’s Cold-pressed Chicken food is perfectly designed to meet the dietary needs of dogs with pancreatitis.

With an ultra-low fat content, our Cold-pressed chicken food ensures that your dog receives the nutrition they need without exacerbating their condition. Our unique formula contains only high-quality, natural ingredients sourced locally in the UK.
