Welcoming your new puppy home

The exciting feeling of beginning a lifelong bond

Bringing a puppy home is a day filled with excitement, and likely a moment that you will remember forever. For me, it’s a journey that started back in 2008, with Ella, my first cocker spaniel puppy. Since then, I’ve had the joy of raising numerous puppies, even breeding a lineage that traces back to Ella.

As a passionate dog lover, I want to share some insights and advice for all the new puppy owners out there, whether you’re embarking on this journey for the first time, or adding to your furry family.

Start Training Early: The Power of Positive Reinforcement

The day I brought Ella home is etched in my memory. It marked the beginning of a beautiful companionship, and this all started with training. Training your puppy is a crucial aspect of creating a strong bond and ensuring a harmonious life together. Start early, be consistent, and most importantly, embrace positive reinforcement.

Socialisation and desensitisation is also so important in the early stages of bringing a puppy home. Introducing them to lots of different stimuli, in a safe way, can ensure your puppy grows into a confident, happy dog. For example, you might socialise your puppy by bringing them to a dog-friendly cafe or pub. You can also desensitise them to being handled by vets or groomers. I do this by frequently touching my puppy’s ears and paws, or slowly introducing nail clippers or a grooming brush.

Puppies are like sponges, absorbing information and forming habits quickly. Reward good and calm behaviour with treats, affection, and praise. Positive reinforcement not only helps in building trust, but also makes the learning process enjoyable for your pup. Whether it’s basic commands or house training, patience and positivity go a long way.

Essential Items for Your Puppy’s Journey to Adulthood

Preparing your home for a new puppy involves more than just setting up a bed and food bowls. Here are some essential items to ease your puppy-to-dog journey:

  • Comfortable Bed: A cosy bed provides a secure space for your pup to rest and relax.

  • Interactive Toys: Puppies are curious and playful. Invest in toys that stimulate their minds and provide entertainment. There are some excellent enrichment toys out there!

  • Quality Food: Nutrition is key to your puppy’s growth. Opt for a high-quality, nutritious diet like our James & Ella Kibble + Raw puppy food. It’s crafted to support your puppy’s overall health and development.

  • Collar and Lead: Introduce your puppy to a collar early on for identification and safety. A lead is essential for walks and outdoor activities.

  • Grooming Tools: Depending on the breed, grooming needs vary. Invest in brushes, nail clippers, and other grooming tools to keep your puppy clean and comfortable. Check out my grooming blog here.

  • Training Treats: Small, tasty treats like our freeze-dried or air-dried range make excellent rewards during training sessions.

  • Safe Space: Designate a safe area in your home where your puppy can retreat when they need some downtime. This could be a crate, a bed, or a cosy corner of a room.

Embrace the Journey: Pets Are Forever

Welcoming a new puppy into your home is a commitment, a promise of love, and a lifelong journey. Cherish each moment, from the playful puppy days to the mature years filled with companionship. Remember, pets are not just a part of our lives; they make our lives whole.

In my own experience with a pack of six incredible dogs, I’ve witnessed the profound impact that these four-legged companions can have on our lives. They ask for nothing, but give us everything. If you’ve decided to share your life with a new puppy, relish every moment, and ensure that your commitment is as enduring as the love they offer.

As you embark on this exciting journey of bringing your puppy home, keep in mind the lessons I’ve learned through years of love and companionship. Training with positivity, providing essential items, and offering a nutritious diet are crucial elements in ensuring a happy and healthy life for your new pup. May your home be filled with wagging tails, wet noses, and boundless joy as you create memories that will last a lifetime.

Here’s to the incredible journey of raising a puppy and to the profound connection you’ll share with your new best friend.

James' Top Tip

My best advice for the day you take your puppy home, is to ask the breeder for an item that smells of your puppy’s mother and siblings. This could be a shared toy or a square cut from a dog blanket, and helps your puppy to feel safe on their journey to their new home.
